Kavana
Book Club -
- What: Come and check out our monthly book group - started this fall. Led
by Jeremy Derfner
and Hannah
Pressman, we'll be discussing a wide
range of books that touch on Jewish themes,
both fiction and nonfiction, the classics
and what's hot off the presses.
- Where: The location will be sent
to those who RSVP.
- RSVP info: We'd like to hear from
you if you want to be a part of this
exciting new program! (Didn't make it to
previoius Book Club meetings? Not a problem!) If
you plan to attend the future sessions,
please send an email to
kavanaseattle@gmail.com . If you're
interested in the group, but can't make
upcoming
dates, still let us know of your interest so
that we can keep you tuned into what's
happening. Thanks, and happy reading!
Upcoming books:
- June 22nd – Maimonides by
Sherwin B. Nuland (Schocken, 2005) "A little
gem of intellectual biography." -Ray Olson,
Booklist.
- Moses Maimonides was a Renaissance
man before there was a Renaissance: a
great physician who served a sultan, a
dazzling Torah scholar, a community
leader, a daring philosopher whose
greatest work——The Guide for the
Perplexed——attempted to reconcile
scientific knowledge with faith in God.
He was a Jew living in a Muslim world, a
rationalist living in a time of
superstition. Eight hundred years after
his death, his notions about God, faith,
the afterlife, and the Messiah still
stir debate; his life as a physician
still inspires; and the enigmas of his
character still fascinate.
- Sherwin B. Nuland——best-selling
author of How We Die——focuses his
surgeon's eye and writer's pen on this
greatest of rabbis, most intriguing of
Jewish philosophers, and most honored of
Jewish doctors. He gives us a portrait
of Maimonides that makes his life, his
times, and his thought accessible to the
general reader as they have never been
before.
- This book is the second in Nextbook/Schocken's
Jewish Encounters Series. For more
information about this book, see:

Book Group Facilitators:
- Jeremy Derfner
is a staff writer at the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation. Before coming to Seattle,
he was in the Ph.D. program in American
history at Columbia University. Before that,
he was a journalist in Washington, D.C.
- Hannah
Pressman is a doctoral candidate in
modern Hebrew literature at New York
University. A former Wexner Graduate Fellow
and MacCracken Fellow, she is currently
serving as the 2007-2008 Hazel D. Cole
Fellow in Jewish Studies at the University
of Washington. Focusing her research on the
role of confession and religious-secular
dynamics in Israeli literary
autobiographies, Hannah has presented her
work at the National Association of
Professors of Hebrew and the Association of
Israel Studies conferences. Her reviews of
contemporary Israeli literature have
appeared in Lilith Magazine. Hannah is
thrilled to be in Seattle and part of the
Kavana community this year!

Teams/Team Meetings - Kavana is a cooperative.
That means that we rely on the time, energy, creativity and passion of the participants
to make this community truly sing. Below are the upcoming team meetings:
- Holiday & Shabbat Team - Please join Lisa Porad, Danyel Fisher and others
to discuss the Kavana holiday calendar. Our next discussion will flesh out what
we want for our High Holiday experiences as well as summer Shabbats. We are
looking forward to a lively discussion/debate on what we as a community would like
to see for our communal and personal holiday celebrations. We want to make sure
that the holidays reflect our community and not just the few on planning duty. Please
RSVP and
we'll send location information.
- Technology Team - Technology is a critical tool for Kavana's success - whether
it's internal technology or the external website. Please
let us know if you'd like to help think about and implement technology as
a way to best enhance the Kavana community.
- Family Education Team - Again - if you're interested in helping think about/set
the tone for and brainstorm on Kavana's education program, please
let us know. We are thinking of some pretty different ways to help
families gain solid Jewish fluency and literacy and could use people passionate
about learning to help us.
- The People & Financial Development Team - Now beginning to take shape,
this team has lots of ways for you to lend your talents. On the PEOPLE side of things,
we are the team that will (among other things yet to be defined) welcome new people
into Kavana and help create our traditions around life cycle events (births, deaths,
& other significant events). On the FINANCIAL side, we will assist in writing
some grants to support our exciting new work. We would love to hear if you are interested
in helping out in one or more of our tasks. We are looking for a core group of people
to be on this team. Please
let us know of your interest in supporting this important aspect of creating
Kavana.

Please note: We want to make sure that our events are accessible to whomever is
interested, regardless of financial capacity. Therefore - if you need any
assistance in paying for events, please let
us know (or email Rabbi Rachel
directly to discuss) Or - if you want to make a
contribution to help defray costs, don't be shy.
Also - please know that, especially as a start-up, it's important that you pay if
you RSVP for an event and don't cancel at least 3 days in advance. We base
purchase and catering quantities on the RSVP number and incur the costs.
(Online payment is through PayPal's system - but is just like any other online,
secure, credit card purchase and does not require registration)
