dir Kavana - Tikkun Olam

Tikkun Olam at Kavana

Tikkun Olam translates literally, to Mending the World. It refers to the notion that it is incumbent upon each of us to strive to complete G*d's work by making the world a better place. This notion is as deeply rooted in Judaism as is the study of Torah.

Welcome to Kavana's Tikkun Olam Program! Our program is still in the early stages of development but we've already embarked on several Tikkun Olam opportunities as part of our High Holiday programming. On this page, you'll find a brief outline of our program, followed by a list of specific activities that you can participate in.

Note that we're looking for participants to join the Tikkun Olam team. As members of the team, you'll help set the program direction and agenda and implement the program. To get involved, please email us.

About Our Tikkun Olam Program

Our Tikkun Olam program addresses three pillars:

  • Social Action - helping needy human beings, locally and globally
  • Environmental Action - helping to protect the earth and other species, locally and globally
  • Inner Growth - pursuing our own spiritual development in a manner that will better equip us to tackle the work of Tikkun Olam

Our programming will include explicit opportunities for action as well as for study. We will also implicitly weave the pursuit of Tikkun Olam throughout all Kavana activities.

Tikkun Olam Activities

Social Action Pillar

The JFS Food Drive - JFS relies on a steady stream of volunteers to help sort, transport and distribute donated food and personal items. To volunteer, please contact JFS directly by calling Jane Deer-Hileman at 206.461.3240 x3155 or email her at volunteer@jfsseattle.org. If you do so, please mention that you represent Kavana.

Further details regarding the JFS Food Drive are available  here.

Our community collected over 200 pounds of food and a generous amount of grocery store gift certificates this High Holiday season. The Kavana community was also well represented at the JFS food sorting event on the Sunday following Yom Kippur. Click here to see the 'Thank You' letter from JFS.

Let's strive to donate one thousand pounds next season!

Environmental Action Pillar

Kavana Carbon Salon - Our first series of meetings was a big success! We have established baseline carbon emissions for six households for the past year (5767). We go into the new year pledging to be conscious of our carbon emissions, to track our emissions through the coming year and to reduce them by 2%. We will be meeting periodically to track our progress and to brainstorm regarding new ways of reducing our carbon footprint. We welcome additional participants at any time. To join, please contact Yoram

See community footprint for the aggregate carbon footprint of all participating households. You can assess your household's carbon footprint by downloading your copy of our carbon calculator. Please tell us about your experience. We'd love to hear feedback on the calculator and to incorporate the results for your household into the cumulative results for the Kavana community.

Kavana Carbon Salon next meeting - All are welcome, whether you're a current participant in the program, new participant or just curious. Please let us know if you'd like to be on the list via email or call Yoram at 206.633.3954.   Next date coming soon...
